Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotoge. It has since become one of the most popular anime franchises in modern times and is often described as one of the best series of the 2010s. The Demon Slayer manga has since ended, and like many great manga series, the ending proved to be controversial, which doesn’t come off as a surprise really, as many modern series (like Attack on Titan, for example) had such an ending. Having said this, you must be wondering what happened in the end? Well, keep reading to find out!

The ending of Demon Slayer can be divided into two segments. In the first, which is set in the present timeline, the Demon Slayer Corps were able to defeat and finally kill Muzan, but after a lot of sacrifices. After that, the Corps was disbanded as the Demons were not a threat anymore.
The second segment is an epilogue set in modern times, which explains that all the deceased characters were reincarnated and that their families lived on in the future as well.
What happened in Demon Slayer?
Japan, Taishō Period. Tanjiro is the eldest son of a large fatherless family who lives in an isolated mountain house in the woods. One day, returning home after being in the village to sell coal, he finds his mother and brothers massacred, except his sister Nezuko, who has been transformed into a demon but still has some human thoughts and emotions. Tanjiro thus begins his journey in search of a cure to make his sister human again and to prevent the same tragedy that happened to them from happening to other people.
He will soon join the Demon Slayer Corps, and along with his two friends, Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibara, they will travel all around Japan and with the help of the powerful Hashira, they will face Muzan and his subordinates in different locations. Muzan, in the meanwhile, will continue searching for a way to become immortal and will send his Upper Moons to kill the Demon Slayers, although not with much success.
Not long after Tanjiro finally mastered the Sun Breathing Style, the Corps prepared for their ultimate clash against Muzan, which first consisted of attacking him in his Infinity Castle, where they defeated his remaining Upper Moons. After that, the final clash against the King of Demons began. The Corps were able to keep Muzan outside until the sun rose and ultimately defeated and killed him, thus bringing the story to an end. The Corps was soon disbanded, and in the distant future, the descendants of the protagonists still love on, along with their legacy.
Demon Slayer‘s controversial ending explained
Okay, as you had the opportunity to read above, the ending of Demon Slayer can be divided into two parts – the present-timeline ending and the epilogue. As far as the first one is concerned, the situation is rather clear. The Demon Slayer Corps, specifically Tanjiro, managed to defeat and kill Muzan once and for all, all after Tanjiro managed to free himself from Muzan’s control. After that – since Muzan was dead – the other demons were no longer a threat, and after mourning their losses (and there were many, trust us), the Demon Slayer Corps was officially disbanded. The protagonists then dispersed, and each ended up living out their lives, with Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke marrying and having their own families.
But, while that concluded the main timeline story, Gotoge also provided us with an epilogue set in modern times, which was the most controversial part. Okay, we saw the now-living family members of the surviving protagonists, which made some sense as their families continued to live on. Still, we also saw that the ones who died were reincarnated and continued to live on. Although it was nice to see them again, the ending proved controversial because Gotoge completely belittled the point of the final battle and the sacrifices of the protagonists, which was a big blow for the series as a whole.
It was a controversial ending, but it wasn’t that complex to understand once you got to the gist. Fans were disappointed, leaving a rather strange aftertaste, but once you understand what Gotoge did, the whole concept becomes much easier to comprehend, which is why we explained it to you here.

Muzan Kibutsuji (鬼舞辻 無惨, Kibutsuji Muzan) was the first and strongest demon in existence. He was originally a sickly young man who lived during the Heian period, who was turned into a demon as a result of an experimental treatment intended to save his life.

, every demon that had been under his control is killed, leaving Tamayo's assistant, Yushiro, as the sole demon left alive. Tanjiro loses sight in his right eye and most mobility in his left arm as a result of the battle, but returns to his family home with Nezuko, Inosuke, and Zenitsu.
Tanjiro, of course, did suffer some massive injuries in the final battle which he has to live with. Tanjiro is left blind in one eye and unable to feel his arm below the elbow, rendering his left hand useless. Kanao also suffered injuries to her eyes, reducing her visibility significantly as well.
Following the death of Muzan Kibutsuji and the eradication of demons for good, it is clear that Giyu has been able to embrace his happier side, shown by his smiles towards the Kamado siblings and even Sanemi, which shows how much their combative relationship has slowly developed into one of mutual respect.
Tanjiro becomes a demon at the very end of the battle and his mind immediately goes berserk as he starts to attack his friends who just fought alongside him.
So yeah, Tanjiro died at the age of 25. Only meaning that tanjiro wasnt born with it. tanjiro didnt get the mark until he became a demon slayer. and yoriichi was born with the mark, as kokushibo mentiones in the manga.
By the end of the manga, only two Hashira were left alive. Thus by the end of the last chapter , only Sanemi Shinazugawa and Giyuu Tomioka were left alive. The short answer is: everyone besides Sanemi, Giyu and Tengen.
In the end, Muzan dies due to sunlight, and beheading, but turns his consciousness in Tanjiro, with the ability to walk in the sun. Demon King Tanjiro is equal to Demon King Muzan, but he can walk in the sun.
After turning into a demon, his little sister Nezuko who had been humanified grabbed onto him to try and get Tanjiro to fight back, seeing his little sister human again. Then while Tanjiro was going off the deep end, Kanoe gave him the same anti-demon drug they gave Nezuko and tanjiro became human again.

After Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke are fully healed, they all move to Tanjiro's old house and live happily. At some point before its disbandment, the Demon Slayer Corps members and their relatives took a commemorative photo together.
Once Tanjiro returned to being human and the threat of demons was erased from Japan, Giyu attended the final Hashira meeting alongside Sanemi, where the Demon Slayer Corps was officially disbanded. Unfortunately, manifesting his Mark in the battle against Akaza also doomed Giyu to die by his 25th birthday.
However, in the manga, Tanjiro lives for years after his battle with Muzan Kibutsuji. He marries Kanao Tsuyuri, bears children with her, and lives a happy life till he meets his end naturally at an old age.
Yes, At the end of the chapter, we can see her slowly transform from a demon to a human and eventually regain all her memories from when she was both human and a demon and has thoughts about them.
Tanjiro would discover that his time at the Demon Slayer Corps had been bearing fruit, and that he had unknowingly been moving up the ranks within the organization. He becomes aware that he, along with his allies Inouske and Zenitsu, had achieved the rank of Kanoe (the fourth rank of the Demon Slayer Corp).
We're getting three movies to wrap up the series in cinemas instead. Demon Slayer Infinity Castle is definitely the final arc, however, with Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zanitsu's stories drawing to a close once the anime ends.
