Tanjiro Kamado is one of the best protagonists in the era of the post-“Big Three” anime series. The protagonist of the Demon Slayer series had absolutely everything you’d want from a great anime protagonist, which is why we are talking about him so often here on Fiction Horizon. What happens to Tanjiro at the end of the series has been a hot topic for a while now and in this article, we are going to reveal what happens to the protagonist of the Demon Slayer manga and anime in the end, i.e., you are going to find out how he died.

As everyone and their grandma knows, Tanjiro Kamado is the protagonist of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is a young boy who had a modest, but happy childhood. His father, a benevolent and caring man, died because of an illness, so the young Tanjiro was left – as the oldest child in the family – to take care of his mother and his younger siblings. They lived in a cabin on a hill and Tanjiro went to town every day to sell coal, which is how the family managed to pay their expenses. Despite living in poverty, they were not unhappy.
One day, Tanjiro went to town but returned late, so a neighbor told him to spend the night at his place because demons could be lurking in the woods at night and Tanjiro might be hurt. Tanjiro agreed and when he returned home the next morning, he found most of his family slaughtered, save for his younger sister, Nezuko, who was turned into a demon. He would find out that it was Muzan Kibutsuji, the King of Demons, who did this and he would soon become a Demon Slayer to avenge his family and to cure Nezuko of her condition.

Tanjiro trained hard and eventually learned the family dance, the Hinokami Kagura, which turned out to be Yoriichi’s Sun Breathing Style, the only Breathing Style capable of killing Muzan. After slaying many Demons, both Lower and Upper Moons, Tanjiro eventually clashed against Muzan with his friends and allies and they were able to defeat him. But at that point, Muzan took over Tanjiro’s body and tried to turn him into a demon so that he could continue living as Tanjiro; while his friends from the outside urged him to come back, Tanjiro was having an internal struggle with Muzan and was on the brink of succumbing.
But, as shonen manga will have it, Tanjiro ultimately managed to fight off Muzan and took control of his body, while Muzan faded into oblivion and died once and for all. With him, the demons also disappeared and the world became a much better and less dangerous place. So, what happened to Tanjiro later in the series?
We have concluded that he did not die in the fight against Muzan and after mourning his fallen friends and allies, he returned to leading a normal life. He eventually married Kanao and the two of them had a family; his descendants are still alive in the time-skip epilogue of Demon Slayer set in the present. Tanjiro, of course, died at one point in the manga, but it wasn’t in the fight against Muzan.
Although there are theories that he died young – having activated the Demon Slayer Mark on his forehead – this is highly unlikely, although Gotoge never confirmed this in the series. By all means, Tanjiro lived well into his old age and died at some point of natural causes, later in the series’ timeline. This was never shown in the manga, but based on what we know, we are quite certain that this is how it happened after Muzan’s defeat.

Muzan Kibutsuji (鬼舞辻 無惨, Kibutsuji Muzan) was the first and strongest demon in existence. He was originally a sickly young man who lived during the Heian period, who was turned into a demon as a result of an experimental treatment intended to save his life.

In fact, Tanjiro did technically die because of the severity of the injuries his Sunbreathing technique caused. He lost an arm, broke multiple bones, and suffered a debilitating head wound that allowed Muzan to inflict him with poison.
Tanjiro, on the contrary, dies at 25 because he does not match Yoriichi's strength. However, manga readers in the same subreddit confirm that Tanjiro and a few other demon slayers live to old age. Instead of dying due to the curse, he dies of natural causes when he is old.
Before he became a Demon Slayer, Tanjiro was a coal burner before his family was slaughtered by Muzan, while his younger sister, Nezuko, was turned into a demon. He eventually died some years later the final battle at the age of 25 because of the demon slayer mark.
Who would win???? Demon King Tanjiro would easily win because think about it… Muzan himself even said that Tanjiro would conquer the sun and be the strongest being on earth stronger than even himself. Tanjiro also has all of Muzan's old abilities and can do them better.
By the end of the manga, only two Hashira were left alive. Thus by the end of the last chapter , only Sanemi Shinazugawa and Giyuu Tomioka were left alive. The short answer is: everyone besides Sanemi, Giyu and Tengen.
Only two Slayers were ever known to be older than 25 with a Mark. Yoriichi lived till old age, likely due to him having been born with the mark and thereby avoiding the curse altogether. Gyomei on the other hand did not activate his Mark until he was already older than 25.
Meanwhile, Tanjiro is recovering in the Butterfly Estate, and comments that now Muzan's control over him is gone, his regenerated arm has heavily aged and lost its sensation from the elbow downwards while his regenerated eye is now blinded.
Hence, Tanjiro does not become a Hashira in the series. He fought alongside his comrades and defeated Muzan, and the organization was disbanded subsequently. Therefore, there was no need for demon hunters or Hashiras, which is why the protagonist didn't obtain the prestigious title during the series.
After turning into a demon, his little sister Nezuko who had been humanified grabbed onto him to try and get Tanjiro to fight back, seeing his little sister human again. Then while Tanjiro was going off the deep end, Kanoe gave him the same anti-demon drug they gave Nezuko and tanjiro became human again.
AND as a Demon, Tanjiro would have limitless stamina which Yoriichi doesn't have making it a battle of endurance ending in Tanjiro's victory. He wins, end of discussion.
Tanjiro decapitates Akaza with the Hinokami Kagura: Setting Sun Transformation. Akaza was bewildered, wondering how Tanjiro did not have any fighting spirit, comparing this feeling to fighting against a plant. He acknowledges that Tanjiro surpassed his speed.
Ultimately, Yoriichi is the only being Muzan ever feared as he personally saw him as the true "monster" between the two of them and to the very end he remained baffled as to how a being like Yoriichi came to exist.
Muzan soon begins burning from the sun forcing him to fight for his life. Before he can overwhelm the lower ranked Slayers, Sanemi appears and slices his right arm, cursing the demon's persistence and demanding him to die. Muzan begins to disintegrate.
Though Muzan is also seriously injured, he uses the last of his powers to turn Tanjiro into a demon. It's supposedly his plan all along, though demon-Tanjiro is pretty quick to try and attack everything around him. Thankfully, Tanjiro is able to turn back to normal after eating some medicine that's made from wisteria.
