General Commentary and Game Overview
And here we are, with yet another game by Hello!
Shine Pursuit is a puzzle-like that is quite familiar for some people: Maybe even WAY TOO FAMILIAR (Super Mario Greetings, Super Mario Bros: Coin Quest) The game has a simple objective: Collect all shines to complete the stage. Despite the simplistic task and overall design, the game is not easy: Indeed, something Hello games always try to keep is the difficulty. Maybe he need to learn that difficulty is not always good....
Pros | +Blending Graphics +Not so many glitches +Polished engine +Hmm... Map Screen? :/ |
Cons | -TOTALLY Unfitting Music -Recycled Game (check out Super Mario Bros: Coin Quest and Super Mario Greetings) -Terrible concept (=Story/Plot) -No main menu/options, not even savefiles. -Overused sprites -Overused sounds (it could have used NSMB sounds) -Hard gameplay -Overused Engine (no new features, such as walljumping) |
Impressions
Gameplay | It's almost exactly the same from Coin Quest and Greetings: you collect "x" number of items to continue to the next stage. It is clear that Hello only get his old engine, build a lot of stages using his old BlackSquirrel sprites and say it's a new game. He could it even name it "Coin Quest 2" or "Greetings 2", no one would notice it. The engine is generally well done, But it is also generally OVERUSED: If it's a Hello game, you can be sure there's not going to be new features such as Walljumping or Groundpounding. IT IS ALWAYS THE SAME. |
Graphics | It's the same old BlackSquirrel sprite that Hello always has been using. He even sometimes try to dodge to that style a bit by adding different sprites of Goombas and Mario, but he seems pretty worried about changing his graphical style. I mean, if Nintendo was also like that, we would still get the ugly old Super Mario World sprites in New Super Mario Bros. What i mean is that it would be (very) helpful if he tried to change the art direction of his games sometimes. Let's take this fangame for example: It's a puzzle-styled platformer. Don't you think something more like Mario Party Advance or Yoshi Island styled would fit more the "Puzzle" theme than the original SMB3 platform sprites? Despites they don't fitting the theme of the game, they at least FIT themselves. That gives him another 4. Next time, try making the sprites fit the game's theme aswell, Hello. |
Sound | The music is just EXTREMELY unfitting, and that's only more proof this is another recycled game from Hello. But i admit Hello has always been not a good chooser for music in his games: Some of his past games features some cool, but EXTREMELY unfitting Mario remixes. I'm starting to think it would have been better if he used the overused SMW overworld music. The sounds are generic sounds from All-Stars. I'm just not giving you more than 5 because there's much newer (and nicier) sounds such as New Super Mario Bros, you can even find them in MFGG's main site. Talk about lazyness. |
Replay | You'll only find yourself replaying Shine Pursuit if you're one of those types who don't stop until you're done with. But if you already played any of Hello's puzzles, there's really NOTHING else you didn't saw here. And the replay gets even worse if you ALREADY played any of Hello's puzzles and DIDN'T like them. |
Final Words
Super Mario Bros: Shine Pursuit is another recycled puzzle game by Hello that keeps the same difficulty and overall overused graphical style. If you played any of his older puzzles and didn't liked them, don't bother downloading this one. |

Quote (Hello on Jan 16 2008, 10:07 PM) This wasn't made with Ultramario's engine.... Ah...ummm..ok, sorry. But i'm sure there's still no other improvement in the engine compared to your older games. Anyway, i'm editing it. | ||
