Frequently Asked Questions

What cuts of chicken can I use for this recipe?

Any type works as you’ll want to cook and dice the chicken prior to making this recipe. I tend to use Rotisserie Chicken or cooked/diced chicken breasts, however, chicken thighs work great too!

How can I give this Chicken and Potato Soup recipe more flavor?

You can add lots of yummy vegetables such as corn, broccoli, spinach, or kale. You can also add red pepper flakes, seasonings of your choosing, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and more! Play around with it and make this your own!

Do I have to peel the potatoes?

If using a waxy potato such as Yukon Gold, New Potatoes, or even Red Potatoes, there is no need to peel. If you are using Russet, I do recommend peeling.

How do I keep my potatoes from getting mushy?

Be sure not to overcook them. If anything, take a few minutes off and keep them a bit more firm as over time, the potatoes will continue getting more tender just by being in the broth, getting reheated, etc.

How to serve this potato soup with chicken?

Since this meal includes protein, starch, and vegetables, it is a full meal in itself. However, when serving it, I love to add a side salad and some crusty bread or Flaky Biscuits!

FAQs

Is there a difference between condensed cream of chicken soup and cream of chicken soup? ›

What's the Difference Between Condensed Soup and Regular Soup? Condensed soup is essentially soup boiled down to a thick stock, with most of the volume of water removed. If you took a can of regular soup and boiled it down to half the volume, you'd get the same thickness as condensed soup.

How do you thicken chicken broth and cream of chicken soup? ›

The most classic and surefire way to thicken a broth-based soup is with a cornstarch slurry. Whisk together equal parts cornstarch (or arrowroot) and water or broth, then whisk it into the pot of soup. A good ratio to get to a pleasant thickness without your soup tasting goopy or heavy is one tablespoon.

How do you thicken chicken potato soup? ›

Add cornstarch to a small amount of cold water or other liquid (wine or stock) and whisk into a thick slurry. Then the slurry can be stirred into a simmering soup, a bit at a time to set the final consistency. Just remember, after you add some of the cornstarch, let the soup return to a simmer.

How to make chicken soup without drying out the chicken? ›

Cold-poaching the chicken breasts, then removing them until the end of the cooking process, guarantees a perfectly tender and juicy texture. Using stock reinforces the flavor of the broth, creating a more deeply flavorful soup.

Why does my cream chicken soup get watery? ›

Watery cream soups can come from a couple of different reasons. One of them is that the thickener that was utilized (be it a fat and flour roux or a liquid and flour or corn starch slurry) was inadequate. By inadequate I mean that there was not enough starch to hold the liquids in the desired thickened suspension.

Can you eat Campbell's cream of chicken by itself? ›

Serving Ideas

A bowl of our Cream of Chicken Soup served with fresh baked bread is hearty enough to serve on its own, or you can beef it up with whatever's fresh in your kitchen. Condensed soups are also the perfect base for casseroles and starters for sauces, so your imagination is the limit.

What is the secret ingredient to thicken soup? ›

Add Flour Or Cornstarch

Instead, ladle a small amount of broth into a separate bowl and let it cool. Add a few tablespoons of flour or cornstarch to the bowl and whisk until it's blended smooth. Next, bring the soup to a simmer and add the mixture back to the pot. Pro tip: Don't dump in the entire mixture at once.

Does adding heavy cream to soup make it thicker? ›

Heavy cream

Use heavy cream as a keto-friendly thickening option for your soups and broths. Heavy cream has more fat than regular whole milk, so you can add it to your soup recipes without worrying about it curdling.

What is the best thickening agent for soup? ›

So, What Is the Best Way to Thicken Soup? Whisking beurre manié (butter-flour paste) into simmering soup is the best way to thicken an otherwise too-watery soup. Add bits of the paste gradually and simmer to cook out any raw flour taste. The broth will be velvety smooth, rich, and thick.

Why isn't my potato soup creamy? ›

One trick to make your potato soup a little less grainy is to add some form of dairy –- cream, milk, or even cheese. Because dairy is generally creamy in texture, that characteristic will carry over into your soup. Crisis averted.

What is the best thickening agent for potato soup? ›

Combine cornstarch and a little bit of water—or the chicken stock from the soup—in a small bowl. With the soup simmering over medium-low heat, whisk in the slurry. The soup should start to thicken almost immediately.

Should homemade chicken soup be covered while cooking? ›

Keep the soup at a steady simmer: Keep the pot partially covered and at a low simmer. You should see slow but steady bubbles and wisps of steam coming from the pot (although don't reduce the temperature so low that the water falls below 165°F or else the chicken won't cook through).

Why is the chicken tough in my chicken soup? ›

Overcooking chicken and buying woody chicken breast are two of the main causes behind rubbery chicken.

Does chicken get more tender the longer you cook it in soup? ›

Yes, chicken breast will get softer the longer you cook it. However, if you cook it for too long, it will become dry and tough. The best way to ensure that the chicken breast stays juicy and tender is to cook it until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.

What's the difference between condensed cream of mushroom soup and regular cream of mushroom soup? ›

These two products aren't identical, but they are very similar. Condensed cream of mushroom soup is a concentrated form of cream of mushroom soup. When you add a cup or two of liquid such as water, broth, or stock to condensed mushroom soup, it becomes cream of mushroom soup!

What has happened to condensed soup? ›

By the end of December all Campbell's cans will have vanished, to be replaced by ones with new labels bearing the message: 'Soon to be Batchelors. ' From March, the product will be rebranded Batchelors Condensed Soup, although the recipe will remain unchanged.

Is condensed chicken broth the same as regular chicken broth? ›

Condensed chicken broth is a concentrated form of broth that has been reduced to remove excess water content, resulting in a thick and intensely flavored liquid.

What is condensed cream? ›

Condensed cream is typically made by simmering regular cream at a low heat to reduce its water content. This slow-cooking process involves evaporating a substantial portion of the water, which results in a thicker and more concentrated product.
